Vintage American Optical AO Hinge Wellington Chocolate Brown Eyeglasses
Condition
Collectors condition. Professionally serviced, carefully buffed, and renewed.
The chocolate-brown frame presents with a polished finish, retaining its distinctive AO monogram fittings and period American Optical temple lettering. Surviving age-related surface marks and wear to the inner lettering reflect its vintage history.
Fitted with replacement clear lenses.
Frame Details
Deep chocolate brown gives this frame a warm, understated presence. Broad upper corners and softly rounded lower rims balance the distinctive bridge and metal fittings.
- Brand: American Optical
- Collector designation: AO Hinge Wellington
- Era: Circa 1950s–1960s, based on documented comparable examples
- Color: Chocolate brown
- Full-rim Wellington silhouette
- Sculpted keyhole bridge
- Silver-tone interlocking AO monogram fittings
- Coordinating metal temple accents
- Riveted multi-barrel hinges
- Longer 150mm temples with curved ear tips
- American Optical lettering and shield emblem inside the temples
Lenses
Replacement lenses with a subtle, near-clear “zero” tint. The light tint adds a gentle tonal finish while keeping the eyes visible and complementing the chocolate-brown frame.
These lenses are later additions to the vintage frame. Custom prescription lenses, readers, or sun lenses may be available following an assessment.
Size & Fit
- Lens width: 46mm
- Bridge width: 22mm
- Temple length: 150mm
The longer temples offer additional reach behind the ears—a useful feature for buyers who find shorter vintage temples restrictive. The front retains its classic 46–22 proportions; longer temples do not increase frame width.
Personal fitting is recommended. Lens height and frame width have not been independently measured.
Why We Love Them | Era & Relevance
The AO monogram fittings are the defining collector detail: small, expressive pieces of metalwork that give this frame an immediately recognizable identity.
Chocolate brown brings depth and warmth to the Wellington shape, while clear lenses let the frame’s proportions and hardware take center stage. The keyhole bridge, tapered temples, and surviving interior lettering complete the period character.
Comparable chocolate-brown AO Hinge Wellington frames are documented by specialist vintage dealers as dating to the 1950s–1960s. This example combines that mid-century design with professional servicing and desirable longer temples.
A distinctive piece of American Optical history, carefully renewed for its next chapter.
