Collectors Condition — exceptionally well-preserved and carefully inspected. The frame may show very light signs of prior handling or wear. Minor surface marks or micro-abrasions may be present on the frame and/or lenses when examined closely under direct light, but they are not noticeable during normal wear and do not affect vision, fit, function, or overall presentation.

This example remains all original, retaining its factory frame, lenses, nose pads and hardware.

The BANDIT was designed as JMM’s elevated interpretation of late-’70s automotive and aviator styling, specifically referencing the visual world surrounding Smokey and the Bandit.

It has substantially more architectural presence than a conventional wire aviator, while the thin beta-titanium construction keeps the profile sophisticated rather than heavy.

Why We Love Them | Era & Relevance

The BANDIT is one of the more unusual metal-frame designs from Jacques Marie Mage: part aviator, part late-’70s automotive design study.

The combination of the angular lens shape, pronounced double bridge, deeply sculpted rim, exaggerated brow line and extremely thin temples creates a silhouette that feels authentically vintage without looking like a reproduction.

Gold with the original pink-gradient lenses is especially strong. The lens color softens the technical gold titanium and gives this pair a distinctly luxurious 1970s character.

More importantly for a collector, this isn’t a modified BANDIT. The original lenses, original hardware and complete presentation remain together.

JMM’s original BANDIT packaging included the handcrafted case, microfiber cloth/pocket square, silk-covered presentation packaging and letterpress certificate carrying the production information. 

Notes

This is the original Gold JMMBT-40 production, not one of the later acetate BANDIT variants that now appear online under the same model name.

That distinction matters. The authentic JMMBT-40 is a 100% beta-titanium, Japan-made, 450-piece production with an original retail positioning far above ordinary JMM acetate models. Current retailer archival pricing shows the Gold BANDIT at $2,255, although earlier retail pricing appears to have varied by market and period.
