Why We Love Them | Era & Relevance
A genuine vintage handmade German optical frame, the Hans Custom Optik Jason represents the golden era of independent European eyewear craftsmanship. Produced in the late 1980s to early 1990s, it was built in small quantities for discerning independent opticians rather than mass-market retail.
Some frames impress with a logo. Others impress the moment you pick them up.
The Jason falls squarely into the second category.
Handcrafted from beautifully polished premium acetate, it delivers the kind of quality typically associated with boutique European makers such as Jacques Durand, Lesca, Lunor, and Max Pittion. The perfectly proportioned panto shape, substantial acetate, and understated detailing create a timeless design that feels just as relevant today as it did decades ago.
What makes this piece especially desirable is its rarity. We were unable to locate another Jason model currently offered for sale or any documented public resale of this model, making it an exceptionally scarce collector’s piece. Hans Custom Optik was a boutique German optical atelier focused on handcrafted eyewear rather than mass production.
Its history is equally compelling. Heritage Auctions sold a pair of Hugh Hefner’s personal Hans Custom Optik glasses for $1,062.50, accompanied by a letter from Hans Fiebig confirming that Hefner commissioned several hundred custom pairs from the atelier during the 1980s. That provenance highlights the reputation Hans Custom Optik earned among discerning private clients and collectors.

Notes
This is one of those rare independent European frames that immediately stands apart. The density of the acetate, precision finishing, and exceptional balance rival many boutique frames retailing today for significantly more. With virtually no examples appearing on the secondary market, it represents a unique opportunity to own a truly uncommon piece of European optical history.

Value & Pricing
Estimated Original Retail: $450–650
Current Collector Value (Unworn): $500–750
Recommended Second Chance Eyewear Price: $650
Given its vintage status, exceptional German craftsmanship, boutique production, documented association with Hans Fiebig’s renowned atelier, and the near-complete absence of comparable market sales, we believe $650 is an appropriate asking price. This is exactly the kind of frame that appeals to serious collectors looking for quality and rarity rather than a recognizable logo.
